Privacy Policy
Tijuana River Watch ("we," "us," or "our") operates tijuanariverwatch.com as a citizen advocacy tool. This policy explains what information we collect when you file a complaint, how we use it, and your rights regarding that information.
Information We Collect
When you submit a complaint through this site, you may provide:
- Your location (neighborhood, not precise address)
- Odor severity, duration, and health symptoms you are experiencing
- Whether your household includes children or elderly residents
- Your first name (optional)
- Your email address (optional)
- Any additional comments you choose to include
We also log the date and time of each submission automatically.
How We Use Your Information
Your complaint data is used exclusively to:
- Document active sewage odor events and health impacts
- Trigger automated alert emails to elected officials and government agencies when complaint thresholds are reached
- Generate anonymous aggregate statistics (total complaints, average severity, top locations) included in those alert emails
- Send you a confirmation receipt if you request one
We do not sell, rent, share, or monetize your personal information in any way. When you submit through the web form, your email address is never included in the automated alert emails sent to officials — only aggregate, anonymous data is shared. If you choose to send an email directly from your own mail client, that message originates from your personal account and is visible to recipients.
Data Storage
Complaint submissions are stored in a Google Sheet accessible only to the site operator. Google's infrastructure is used to process form submissions via Google Apps Script. Google's privacy policy applies to data processed through their services and is available at policies.google.com/privacy.
Data Retention
Complaint records are retained for as long as necessary to document the ongoing sewage crisis and its public health impact. You may request deletion of your personal information (name and email) at any time by contacting us at the address below.
Your Rights (California Residents)
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) gives you rights including the right to know what personal information we collect, the right to request deletion, and the right to opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell personal information. To exercise your rights, contact us at the email address below.
Children's Privacy
This site is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has submitted information through this site, contact us and we will delete it.
Cookies and Tracking
This site does not use cookies, tracking pixels, analytics services, or third-party advertising scripts. No browsing data is collected.
Changes to This Policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the effective date at the top of this page.
